Exploring a new Vista

With the end of their Motability car lease approaching fast, the Thompson family from Devon had to embark on a search for their next wheelchair accessible vehicle. Here’s what happened next…

Jackie and David required  a car that could cater for their busy family of six and accommodate their son Hamish’s wheelchair. As Jackie explains, “We owned a larger vehicle before, but the wheelchair ramp was quite heavy and awkward to use. When the time came to renew we wanted a family car with lots of space but in a smaller vehicle … we didn’t ask for much!

“I made some enquiries with Motability and discovered the Volkswagen Vista. It seemed ideal, so I gave Allied Mobility a call to find out more. When we spoke with our mobility consultant, Jon, we decided we wanted to see two different vehicles which wasn’t a problem, he brought both vehicles to our home.

“After seeing the Vista our minds were made up. It was definitely the one for us. There’s plenty of room inside and it’s a good bit smaller in height than our old car so it met all of our demands. It was great!”

The Vista is a multi-passenger vehicle based on the Volkswagen Caddy, capable of carrying a driver, four passengers and a wheelchair passenger. Wheelchair access is given due priority via its inclusion of a lightweight FlatFold ramp, lowered floor and high quality wheelchair restraint system.

“Since getting the car we’ve found using the ramp much easier, as it’s lighter and shorter. It makes going out in the car much more enjoyable,” continues Jackie.

“As a 15-year-old, Hamish is always on the go – whether it’s swimming, going out with his friends, going to school, attending hospital appointments or taking part in fundraising activities. He has raised over £10,000 for Children in Need over the past six years. Having a wheelchair accessible car is vital for his independence.

“We also decided to have privacy glass fitted to our vehicle which Allied offered free of charge. We’re really happy with the Vista, it’s a great family car and we definitely made the right choice.”

The Vista is available now to purchase or lease through the Motability scheme, with Advance Payments starting at £3495.
